🍃 Unwind & Relax: The Art of Proactive Rest

Every week, I proactively rest.

Lately, that has meant spending Saturdays in my pyjamas in bed watching some good drama on TV due to a chronic illness flare-up.

But, whether I’m spending the day in bed or sitting in the sunshine reading, etc., I intentionally schedule time for relaxation and rejuvenation around working hours and on weekends.

I used to feel guilty about taking this time for myself, and it’s only been the last six months that I’ve learned to love my dressing gown.

I would feel lazy in the past if I wasn’t up, dressed and ready for action, so I gave myself a goal of learning to wear my dressing gown without feeling guilty, and now I do what I want.

I have actively changed my lifestyle over the past few years to reduce work stress and rest more.

The benefits to my mental health have been enormous, and whilst I’m still not quite where I want to be with my lifestyle, I would never give up my proactive rest time.

When I don’t allow myself time for proactive rest, I immediately notice the impact on my stress levels.

I work longer hours and become grumpy with frequent moments of ‘hanger’ because I don’t eat at a time my body needs me to.

Proactive rest isn't just about lounging around—it's a vital component of self-care that helps combat stress and improve overall wellbeing.

Research shows that incorporating regular periods of rest into your routine can significantly reduce stress levels, enhance cognitive function, and boost creativity and productivity.

When we allow ourselves the time to rest and recharge, we're better equipped to handle life's challenges with resilience and grace.

Having the time to proactively rest has become easier for me as my daughters have grown older and parenting responsibilities have lessened.

Weirdly, though, they excel at proactive rest, which, in fact, has taught me to get better at resting.

I still struggle to nap, and that’s my next goal: let myself nap whenever possible!

So, let's embrace the art of proactive rest, my dear friends.

Let's prioritise our wellbeing, reclaim our joy, and cultivate a life filled with balance and vitality.

Wishing you peace and relaxation.
